Aquarium Supplements
Even in their natural
state, salt water creatures (in fact, all manner of creatures) do not get all
the required nutrients that they ought to. That is why you can actually see some
reef dwellers deviating from their usual diets so as to add the necessary aquarium additives into their systems. No one actually taught these animals to seek
dietary aquarium supplement or know what aquarium additives they ought to get in the first
place – and yet many of them do so out of pure animal instincts. It is just Nature’s way of ensuring that animals remain healthy during their life
spans so that they could pass their healthy genes to a new batch of
offspring.
If you are a salt water
aquarium and fish tank enthusiast, you are naturally concerned with the
well-being of your marine dwelling pets (or at least, we hope you are). Aside
from re-creating an almost perfect reef like environment for them to live in,
and providing the proper feed, you also need to offer a selection of aquarium additives for their diets. Fish food can only offer so much; and many of these proffered
feeds are even often wasted when food is ignored on purpose or overlooked
accidentally.
Besides, with the numerous
filters we have installed in our salt water aquariums and fish tanks, we are
actually removing some of the essential elements salt water dwellers need in
order to survive. Some marine creatures need certain dietary aquarium supplements to
boost their breeding and egg laying abilities. Others need aquarium additives to enhance their natural colors and overall health.
Fortunately, there are now
prepared aquarium additives that would allow fish keepers to re-introduce
dietary supplements in small doses. Although technically, supplements are
supposed to be safe even in large doses, moderation is still the key in the
maintaining a healthy lifestyle – even if the intended recipient happens to be a
marine dwelling creature.
When choosing aquarium supplements
for your fish and or coral, it would be advisable to know what minerals they are actually
lacking. If you are not so well-versed with such data, you can simply ask the
local aquarium fish store for advice. If not, you can catch up on a lot of reading about reef
life and the like. There are many books about this topic, and certainly a lot
more websites about saltwater fish and invertebrate-raising that you can look up
on.
It should be noted though
that not all aquarium supplements are necessary or even welcome. Some of these
supplements (although pricey at best) may actually do absolutely nothing for
your marine pets.
If you really want to try
giving aquarium supplements, you should take careful consideration of the information
written on the aquarium supplement packaging, its instructions on how to dole
these out and the dosages required for every gallon of salt water. Some of the
more common supplements include supplements for bone growth (for fish); calcium
production (for fish and corals); and promotion of nerve conduction (for
invertebrates); to name a few.
